Matt Knudsen is fresh off his appearance at the Highplains Comedy Festival and will be at TheBox tonight. You might have seen Matt in the movie Gangster Squad or you may also recognize him from his appearances in Emmy winning shows like Big Love, Boston Legal or Malcolm in the Middle. He also host the podcast “Grabbing Lunch With Matt Knudsen”. Tickets are available here and at the door, and lets be honest, you don’t have better plans for a Wednesday.
Do you prefer acting or standup?
I would most prefer to do stacting, wherein I would perform stand up about acting.
Favorite project you’ve worked on?
Honestly I would have to say Malcolm in the Middle because it was the first time I had ever been on a show that I watched regularly. Also, I did a scene with just Bryan Cranston and even though it was comedic, his character Hal was upset and he cried real tears. It was the best acting I’ve ever seen live. Amazing.
What was your craziest experience with the Merchant Marines?
Lots. Seedy dive bars in foreign ports. Suspect shipmates. Being taken to a brothel and threatened with a gun. Good times.
You recently performed at the Highplains Comedy Festival, do you have favorite festival or venue?
True. I have to say, it would be difficult to pick a favorite at High Plains but that was one of the coolest things about the festival. I didn’t just do stand up, I was also a contestant on a show called Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction, which is Bryan Cook’s show/podcast on Nerdist and a live You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes. One was in the 3 Kings Bar on S. Broadway and one was in The McNichols Building next to the Denver Mint. Overall, I did 8 shows at 8 different venues including something called The Canni-bus where Ben Kronberg MC’d a bus tour that visited Denver dispenseries while stand ups told jokes. I thought each show was unique and cool.
Who is (living) the best comedian?
Bill Cosby. Easy. I think most comedians would have to have him in their top 5.
Who would be your dream guest for “Grabbing Lunch”?
Bill Cosby. Easy.
Do you prefer to drive or fly?
Meow kitty’s got claws. Honestly it depends. I’ve actually been on tour for a few weeks and have driven the whole time. I’ve been in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne and Denver. I’ve also been a total tourist along the way so even though I’m solo, I went zip-lining, white water rafting, a Colorado Rockies game, a rodeo. Sometimes I feel like Robert Deniro’s character in Cape Fear. It’s been cool to drive and stop but if I’m just doing a weekender, I usually fly.
What would you say differentiates you from other comedians?
I don’t mind the silences.
What was the first big laugh you got? What happened?
The first time I remember making an adult laugh was in a music class I was taking as a kid and our teacher was trying to teach us to sing the song, “That’s What Friends Are For.” I don’t remember exactly what I said but it was timely and had something to do with Dionne Warwick.
Have you been to Albuquerque before?
First time in the ABQ but my spirit animal has never left.
Red or Green?
Green buddy, always green. Go!
